The study of light and how to use it remains fundamental to the way Irene Kung builds her compositions. She creates an atmosphere around a single tree, taking the detail or the whole trunk, framing the crown from above or head on, always looking for the best way to bring out the character of the plant she has chosen to portray. The images are suggestive and carry the viewer into a poetic and suspended dimension: each time she tries to catch the spirit of a place and to pass it on untouched and pure, free of every possible contamination and of every urban disturbance. Hers is a solitary process, made of waiting and of pauses, in search of the right moment. "In the way I work "it is possible to bring the tree back to what I felt. That is exactly what my work consists of: I take away what is not essential in order to show the tree as it is, as I feel it. It is intuition, it is irrational: the rational can lead us astray, feeling cannot." In silence, without a breath of wind, the wood she dreams composes itself almost by magic, image after image and page after page. It is a wood outside time, of many seasons and different lights, a wood that knows no difference of species and can let pines and olives, palms and willows, fruit trees and evergreens live together.
