The first volume is given over to the forty-two Italian authors chosen to go back over sixty years of the country, both in time and across its geography, seen through the eyes of its greatest picture-makers. It is a view from within, as the curator puts it in her introductory essay, and each series is introduced by a text from the author who made it. The six decades the selection crosses are opened by short historical essays.
