A singular volume that lets us look at the work of two artists and at the sense of a game that goes on for ever. It starts, of course, at number one, Italy. Then two, the little girl; then three, the cat; four, the pig; and so on to the last, fear. These are the ninety numbers of the tombola seen through the definitions of the Neapolitan Smorfia, the dream book from which it derives. That is the starting point chosen by Antonio Biasiucci, among the most significant Italian artists of our time, whose black-and-white photography — strong, dense and unmistakable in style — has become a hallmark of his research. His images are matched with numbers drawn for the occasion by Mimmo Paladino, who signs this unique work with him; it unfolds among soft archetypal meanings and visionary suggestions and is enriched by two texts, Numeri by Marino Niola and Le tavole di Alice by Eduardo Cicelyn. The homage to Naples and to the historical memory of the city is held in these ninety images, each with its intimate, deep reference to the number that stands for it and to the meaning tradition gives it. The volume comes with a large double-sided board.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
