Sebastião Salgado is one of the greatest and best-known photographers of our time, at work for fifty years documenting the life of human beings and of the planet. After years as a photojournalist he turned, from the early two thousands, to the Earth as a magnificent resource to be told, contemplated, known and loved. After the vast project Genesis, devoted to the remotest regions of the planet and to the majestic beauty of worlds where nature, animals and living beings still hold their balance with the environment, and after Amazônia, for which he travelled to catch the incredible wealth and variety of the Brazilian rainforest and the ways of life of its peoples, settling in their villages for weeks at a time, he now captures the breathtaking beauty of the Antarctic in a gallery of exclusive images. From the Antarctic Peninsula to Canada, from Patagonia to the Himalaya, from South Georgia to Russia, these astonishing photographs portray, in a black and white rich with contrast, places increasingly studied by researchers investigating the geological history of the planet as well as the short- and long-term consequences of the climate crisis and of global warming.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
