On 24 May 2024 it was ten years since the death of Andy Rocchelli, the Italian photojournalist killed by mortar fire in Ukraine near the town of Sloviansk while documenting the conditions of civilians trapped in the Donbass conflict. With him that afternoon were the human rights activist and interpreter Andrei Mironov, also killed in the attack, the French photojournalist William Roguelon and a local driver. During a halt by an abandoned railway line the group came under fierce fire from heavy and light artillery, and the aimed shooting that killed Mironov and Rocchelli and gravely wounded Roguelon was found by the Italian investigating authorities not to have been accidental. In May 2016 the last pictures Rocchelli took while under fire were recovered from a memory card found by his colleagues at Cesura in an inside pocket of his camera bag: they record how long the attack lasted, the shape of the place where the victims were, and the civilian clothes they were wearing. Working with his family, the publisher retraces his photographic story with news and information about him together with a selection of some ninety of his most telling pictures.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
