Text by Francine Prose

The first monograph devoted to the work of Anna Di Prospero. Among the most inventive eyes of the contemporary scene, she builds an account that is an original search into identity and into her own story: the volume gathers her best-known series and her most interesting pictures, and is enriched by a vibrant and involving text from the American writer Francine Prose. Camera in hand, she lays her eyes each day on the ordinary and gives it back in images that are at once intimate and absolute. "For me the extraordinary lies in the reworking I do through my constructed pictures, where what is personal becomes something more universal, but with a point of view of my own," she says. The pictures show her at home, in the garden, with the people she shares her life with — her parents, her partner, her children — and her eye moves out towards her own city, Latina, or towards the ones she visits for work, Paris or New York. The portraits are the exact opposite of the selfies of our time, because in every image she appears with her back turned, taking on a new form each time in order to tell of the complexity we have in common and to let the viewer step in.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
