Lampi series

A book that celebrates the first seventy-five years of the best known and most decorated agency in the world, always a forge and a laboratory of images, styles, paths and authors. The account was put together by the photographer and documentary maker Philippe Séclier, who patiently collected the interviews and the recollections of the agency’s members. Ever since Robert Capa, on a terrace of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, thought of founding an agency and named it after a bottle of champagne, a great deal has happened both inside it and in the world. Great authors followed one another; there were sudden and terrible losses — the deaths of Capa, of Bischof, of Seymour — but there were also extraordinary reportages, unique in their force and their weight, that let us know our own present while showing the world what documentary work can do: the passage to Mao’s communist China; the Cold War and the arrival of Fidel Castro in Cuba; the stars of Hollywood taken intimately and against convention; the Russian invasion of Prague; and then the war in Kosovo, the eleventh of September, the Covid pandemic and the war in Ukraine. Year by year the book retraces many of the stages where the agency’s history crossed that of the modern world, setting out for each date an event and a name not to be forgotten.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
