Comics and the photographic image are two of the visual languages that best offer ways of reading the present, and though neither has been studied much alongside the other they have many points of contact. In a world of images, some telling and some negligible, the two prove able to converse perfectly inside visual culture and to keep telling new stories with a formidable grip on reality. The book gathers and deepens the meetings of a series run by the Fondazione Forma, winner of a public call from the Ministry of Culture, with the publisher and the Rome University of Fine Arts. To explore what draws these two ways of telling together and what sets them apart, several experts of both come face to face. After an introduction by Alessandra Mauro, Michele Smargiassi examines the figure of the reporter in drawn stories — the gift of ultra-sight, the newsman as a comic-book hero. Luca Raffaelli and Alessandra Mauro discuss the parallel history of the two forms from frame to frame; Raffaelli then takes up with Roberto Koch the device of telling in sequence; and Cinzia Ghigliano and Sara Vivan discuss with Mauro the women who are the heroines of drawn stories, among them Tina Modotti, Gerda Taro and Vivian Maier. A closing text considers the two languages from the point of view of television.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
