Text by Pierre-Alexandre Mateos
Published on the occasion of Hubert Marot's exhibition at ZÉRUÌ, London

Chaotic Human Nature emphasises the loss of our current existences while still conceding a certain tenderness. In a riot of post-Y2K images: dried thistles; monumental beach fairground; faded luxury; everyday detritus and fleeting tenderness.

Hubert Marot (b. 1986) graduated from Gobelins – l'École de l'image in Photography. He lives and works in Paris. Hubert Marot's practice is illusionistic: photographs are paintings, installations sculptures; but is also prudent, wise, meticulous. It comes from observation, from the careful gaze he takes around him. His work is also marked by a form of mysterious triviality and a penchant for antiquity, the imperishable, a race that he knows is lost in advance.

His work has been exhibited both in France and internationally in solo and group exhibitions such as Studiolo, FR; Fonda Space, DE; Sans Titre Gallery, FR; High Art Gallery, FR; Fondation Ricard, FR; Fondation Vuitton, FR; Galerie Until Then, FR; The Camera Club of New York, USA; The Pill, TR; La Friche Belle de Mai, FR.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
