Akimitsu Takagi (1920-1995) is one of the great Japanese crime novelists of the twentieth century. Mad about tattooing, he documented the tattoo world of Tokyo in the 1950s and 1960s. Forgotten in the writer's library and unknown until their discovery in 2017, these photographs establish him as one of the most important witnesses of the history of tattooing in twentieth-century Japan.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
