With work by Shūzō Takiguchi, Nobuya Abe, Kiyoji Ōtsuji and others

In the 1930s a great number of works influenced by surrealism were shown in Japan under the name of avant-garde photography. Among them were those of Shūzō Takiguchi (1903-1979), who shortly afterwards founded the Avant-Garde Photography Association with Nobuya Abe (1913-1971). Their theoretical approach to the medium would in turn influence other artists, and this volume follows how a way of making something out of nothing much travelled through several generations.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
