Photographs made by Kenzo Tange himself

Kenzo Tange, one of the most important architects of the twentieth century, combined traditional Japanese styles with modernism and undertook large post-war urban projects in Tokyo and abroad. In 1960, with the photographer Yasuhiro Ishimoto, the architect Walter Gropius and the graphic designer Herbert Bayer, he published Katsura, in which he questioned the received reading of that villa; this volume gathers the pictures Tange himself made between 1949 and 1959, on his own sites and travels.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
