This artist's book, rooted in the history of the medium, questions through meticulous visual montage the historical construction of museum collections. In 2014, while researching, the French artist Dominique Hurth came across four boxes filled with cyanotypes by Thomas W. Smillie, the first curator of the photographic collection of the Smithsonian until the beginning of the twentieth century; from that material she builds a stuttering account of how a collection comes to be made.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
