Now legendary, the Japanese magazine Provoke overturned the history of the medium. Its three issues, published between 1968 and 1969 by Takuma Nakahira, Yutaka Takanashi, Daido Moriyama, Koji Taki and Takahiko Okada, are reproduced here in full and accompanied by historical and critical texts. Setting the review back into a post-war context of social and political upheaval, the volume follows the way a grainy, blurred, out-of-focus language became a form of protest and of performance.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
