Festivity, dance and death have long woven a web together in Japan. Taken during the Obon festival, Rebekka Deubner's night pictures capture fragments of this Buddhist celebration that honours the departed ancestors every summer and their presence among the living. Fireworks, pieces of bodies, masks and fabrics reveal odori, the dance of the Bon festival, whose gestures, music and costumes give body to the spirits of the dead within a summer tradition five hundred years old.
