At the dawn of the medium the sky was systematically grey: both art photography and photojournalism were long dominated by black and white. Although the first colour film reached the market in 1935, it was reserved for the world of advertising and long held to be a commercial, vulgar practice without artistic interest. Only in the 1960s, a pivotal moment when more and more photographers explored the creative possibilities of the medium, did that change. William Eggleston, whose career spans more than five decades, contributed significantly to that shift in mentality, and this volume, published for the exhibition at C/O Berlin, follows the way his eye finds the strange inside the most ordinary American scenes.
