Texts: Is Mom a Refrigerator? by Tokuko Ushioda, The Innards of Our Homes by Kanta Sanoyama, The Pleasure of Looking at Refrigerators by Hiroshi Kashiwagi

Tokuko Ushioda trained under Yasuhiro Ishimoto and Yutaka Takanashi at the Kuwasawa Design School in 1960; she ended up teaching there and archiving the school's output. After a period of street work she returned to that archival impulse, this time turning it on domestic daily life with the series Ice Box: begun in 1981 and still ongoing, it presents portraits of the refrigerators of different households, revealing the lives and the personalities of their owners. This copy, with the original red obi, comes from the first printing of 1996.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
