"At ten, I put my index finger on the surface and open my eyes on the blue sea. Three times I start again, three times the same thing happens: the middle of the ocean. So I spin the globe with my eyes open and I see Benin go past, the great baobab standing from south to north drawn by its borders. The quality of the name of that country, Benin, appears to me for the first time: harmless. In life I look for safe places, kind people, what will not kill me, and I take the sign gladly." Written from a single autochrome of the Archives de la Planète — two vodunsi of Hêviosso, the thunder divinity, photographed at Abomey in Dahomey in February 1930 — the volume belongs to the Fléchette series, which sets the plates made at Albert Kahn's instigation between 1909 and 1931 in dialogue with contemporary writing, updating a hundred years later the question of the disappearance of worlds.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
