Reissue of the 1996 volume

In 1965 the German photographer Michael Schmidt (1945-2014) began to photograph the streets, the buildings and the inhabitants of West Berlin in a semi-documentary manner. Ein-heit (U-ni-ty), made between 1991 and 1994, is a work on contemporary urban landscapes and portraits of Germany intercut with historical pictures from the National Socialist period, put together by the photographer in response to the fall of the Wall in 1989 and to the reunification of East and West that followed.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
