Three thousand shoe shiners go out into the streets of La Paz and El Alto each day in search of clients. They are of all ages and in recent years have become a social phenomenon in the Bolivian capital.

What marks this tribe is the use of ski masks so as not to be recognised by those around them: they confront the discrimination they face through those masks, since in their neighbourhoods nobody knows they do this work, and at school they hide it.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
