From 2013 to 2019 Leah Frances explored America’s real and imagined images of itself. A Canadian-born photographer raised on Vancouver Island, her early proximity to the United States and a diet of mid-century American cinema instilled a fascination for commonly-held concepts of “Americanness”. Now living in Pennsylvania, she is interested in identity, its roots and perceptions. Her photographs focus on small, striking moments with a persistent, quiet optimism; the framing creates a displaced experience, an alternate reality, and the image becomes a portal to a flexible experience of time.
