A lone traveller in a foreign land, Slovenian photographer Dino Kužnik projects his gaze onto the iconic emblems of the American West. Made between 2016 and 2019 on road trips, the work is rooted in the westernisation of his home country and the resulting lack of national identification that marked his youth: a personal exploration of the symbols of Americana from his youth in opposition to his adult identity. A nostalgic vision of the American dream contrasted with the artist’s own process of applying for an artist visa, travelling through Arizona, California, New Mexico, Utah and Nevada.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
