In 1989 Kai Wiedenhöfer photographed the fall of the Berlin wall in his home town and was deeply moved by that experience of history unfolding. At the time he believed, like many, that the event would mark the end of walls as political tools, and dismissed them as anachronistic instruments of division. More than twenty years later history has proved otherwise: barriers have enjoyed a barbaric renaissance, and have been erected in the United States, in Europe and in the Middle East in the aftermath of political, economic, religious and ethnic conflict.
