What is special about Boris Mikhailov as a maker of books is that he thinks of and develops photography in sequences, in spaces and cuts, in the forms of its montage. Taken as a whole, the books and the book drafts, which often exist only as a single original copy, create a retrospective of a very particular and intimate kind. Two artist books are reproduced here in facsimile, interrupted by illustrated text. Mikhailov is seen as a chronicler of the history of his Ukrainian homeland and of the everyday life of the so-called little people.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
