Text by Makram el-Kadi

Walls are barriers by definition, and they can also be windows onto whatever conflict is going on around them: in times of strife they become a means of expression for every community, a canvas for the suppressed. Karam photographs the walls of Beirut and the villages around it, the political posters, the stencils of young graffiti writers, the surfaces still carrying the marks of the war. Not having grown up in Lebanon, she says, is what lets her see them at all, where the local population has long since filed them away with the other mundane furniture of daily life.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
