A selection of one hundred and sixty works offering a broad and almost complete overview of the Enchanted Mountains of the Antonioni Museum. The aim is to present the entire creative process, from the original tempera studies, in their minimal formats, which for the ingenious artist served merely as the starting point for his work, to the photographic enlargements, or blow-ups, namely the mechanical transformation of the paper fragments.

The exhibition provides an opportunity to explore the dialogue between the photographic abstraction of the Enchanted Mountains and the scenic structure and “psychological power of color” in several celebrated films: from the black-and-white, petrified mineral world of L’Avventura (1959), to the violent colored fumes and livid mists of Red Desert (1964), the lunar landscape of Zabriskie Point (1970), and the ochre and pink landscape of The Passenger (1974).

The central sequence of Blow-Up (1966), in which the protagonist, through photographic enlargement, discovers a reality that had escaped the naked eye, instead becomes a metaphor for the creative process he would employ in composing the works that bear the same title.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
