Essays by Stephen Reily, Roger Lipsey and Christopher Meatyard

Published with the exhibition of Meatyard’s pictures of Thomas Merton at the Louisville Visual Art Association in 2013, for the visit of the Dalai Lama to Louisville, the book reproduces all 29 photographs, with excerpts from Merton’s journals as captions and previously unreleased calligraphic works by Merton. "This series of photographs, by a 20th century master, of a 20th century seeker, is especially remarkable, because it combines the formalism and relevance of great art with the intimacy, the playfulness, the casual snapshotty sense of lost time that arises between dear friends." We cannot look at them without seeing the countdown from January 1967 to Merton’s final departure from Kentucky in September 1968 and his death in Bangkok three months later, a time of upheaval and uncertainty reflected in the journal entries. The two men also planned an experiment together: words sent by the monk, to which the photographer would answer with pictures.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
