Sohei Nishino's first photobook is a tome of 496 pages devoted to one diorama map, transposing this artist's unique methodology to the photobook form itself. Since 2003, photographer Sohei Nishino has made nearly twenty diorama maps of various cities around the world. The artist spends months at a time to walk the streets of each city and photograph upwards of 10,000 exposures using 35mm film. After printing his myriad rolls of film as contact sheets, he pieces together the individual frames with meticulous detail over a canvas of several square meters. The final assemblages are a new kind of map that document Nishino's experience of the city. For the Diorama Map Tokyo (2014), Nishino spent nearly three months in the autumn of 2014 walking the streets of Tokyo as well as riding its rivers in canoes to capture the city from near-countless angles. This publication makes use of the book format to show a magnified view of the completed Diorama Map Tokyo by dividing it into 496 sections. The first page begins with the upper left-hand corner of the map and progresses horizontally; the last page reproduces the bottom right-hand corner.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
