Trained as an architect and with a long career as an artist, Julião Sarmento has been taking photographs for more than forty years. From early on his technical and lyrical control of the medium allowed him to develop a personal style, and his pictures cover a wide variety of interests: people, places, gatherings, travels, animals in and out of zoos, cars, experiments on light. The volume feels like a road book through his archive, where raw, spontaneous images stand side by side with more carefully constructed series in an elegant edit, mixing medium format and 35mm, colour and black and white.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
