Over a long career the artist has made pictures in places as far apart as Kazakhstan, South Africa and the French Basque country. But in the summer of 1989, before the grants and the awards, she was a graduate student who had never made pictures away from home; that changed when she was put in touch with a family in Perry County, in eastern Kentucky.
