Lyon is celebrated for the photographs and the films, and much less for the writing, which has been running alongside them the whole time and has widened their reach: in his own books and on his blog, and in papers as varied as the Los Angeles Times, the New York Review of Books and Aperture. Four hundred pages of previously unpublished texts here cover nearly six decades of carefully kept work on American social change, which he witnessed from inside. Conversations and a good deal of visual material are included; for anyone following Lyon, or American documentary work in general, it is the key volume.
