Black-and-white pictures made in the streets of American cities by the Japanese photographer Tad Wakamatsu. The book draws a portrait of the American way of life in the 1960s at a moment marked by political tension, by war and by segregation, but also by the birth of alternative movements. Wakamatsu was in the United States learning the trade from fashion photographers and portraitists, Richard Avedon, Hiro Wakabayashi and Bert Stern among them, and the book carries a text in Japanese about that apprenticeship.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
