After Palms of the fog, the Canadian artist returns to photography for a book that runs on his usual material, language and form. The black-and-white series lays out one fictional day in the coastal town of Shimoda, in Japan. A long text slipped inside a poster-cover in acid-pop colours supports it, and the landscape the pictures build is thick with allegory and with nods to the history of Japanese photography. What the pages weave together is a link to the unreal, to mystery, and now and then to something like hallucinated transformation.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
