Over the years Yokonami has quietly traced the line between instinct and identity. What began as a study of a child's spontaneity, children balancing fruit between shoulder and chin under a changing sky, turned into a reflection on how self-awareness grows without anyone noticing. In the early pictures the children look into the lens without a second thought, their expressions running from mischief to a solemn calm; they exist slightly apart from the world, wild and serene at once, and balancing a piece of fruit becomes a poetic figure for an unspoken dare: simply to be. Returning to the same subjects five years later, under the same sky and the same light, a small shift shows: the hands are steadier, the looks more settled.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
