Today STANLEY/BARKER launches a new portfolio series. Each portfolio operates similarly to a book, playing close attention to sequence, layout and construction - however in a shorter form, and lower edition, allowing for the finest and most unique materials to be used. Seven Kinds of Loneliness is a series of six diptychs presented as broadsides, and a silver print housed in a hand-constructed print box by American artist Raymond Meeks. Collectively, the prints and pairings attempt an inquiry toward “decreation”, an activity described by Simone Weil as “undoing the creature in us”—an undoing of the self. By way of pairing domestic landscapes with portraits of his partner in deep repose, Meeks forms a close alliance at the place where the subliminal, restorative state of sleep converges with the disorder and uncertainty of the sentient world. The series of diptychs become a formidable architecture for exploring dual existences that resist and attract—disparate subjects in dialogue without the goal of cohesion and yet, share unifying traces as they’re more closely observed.
