Kafkanistan looks at present-day travel to Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran, and builds a picture of that world out of things that actually happened. What began with an email asking Lukas Birk to join the ethnographer Sean Foley on documentary research turned into a three-year undertaking that produced three films, a book and a touring multi-media installation.
Started in 2005, it gathers stories, souvenirs and rumour-infused realities. The book was published in 2008 by Fraglich Publishing and republished in 2012 by Glitterati Inc. All profits go to Afghan Aid.
