Introduction by Natasha Christia
Printed in five different countries and assembled into one box

Fernweh is Lukas Birk's most personal work, made from the lives of his late father and grandfather and from his own, exploring the parallels and the differences between the three. His grandfather Viktor served as a soldier in the unified armed forces of Nazi Germany during the Second World War; his father Andreas was a traveller and adventurer of the 1970s and 80s; and finally there is Lukas himself, a contemporary wanderer and artist.

Old travellers' guides, maps and handcrafted family albums of mountain excursions and far-away road trips coexist with material from Lukas' own store of prints, journals, travel memoirs and portraits of anonymous men, collected or produced between 1999 and 2017.

“Fernweh unwraps the lifetime of three generations of men who shared a passion for travelling, photography and the mountains.” — Natasha Christia

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
