The project continues Zhao Qian's exploration of the intricate relationship between images and illusions. He goes into the kind of images that can produce illusions — the invisible friends imagined by children, the singing teapots of animated films, unseen shadows, extraordinary creatures beyond logic — and attempts to translate those illusions that are difficult to capture, such as the world seen through the eyes of someone with floaters, where ghostly transparent shapes drift aimlessly. His practice is rooted in these images of illusion, while maintaining a vigilant stance against collective illusion.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
