The work is drawn from a project the cinematographer Peter Suschitzky pursued over seven years, on and off between his activities in the film industry. He took it up after years of recording life all over the world, wanting a theme he could work on at home and in his own time. He knew it would be hard to do anything original with the subject he had chosen, since so many painters and makers, great and small, had worked on it before him; nevertheless he felt he had to put his own imprint on it. The volume also includes a small but very fine selection of his other work.

“In a hidden and cramped studio in an unknown, possibly non-existent city, we discover naked women. Their bodies are palpable, humid, breathing.”

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
