In October 2016 the documentary maker and anthropologist Alegra Ally travelled to the Yamal peninsula in Siberia to join a Nenets family and record their way of life. For two months she lived on the Arctic tundra with Lena, Lyonya, their daughter Christina and their three dogs, following the family's daily rhythms as they prepared for the annual winter migration.

Despite months of planning, fundraising and preparation, nothing could have prepared her for what unfolded. Living in one of the harshest environments on the planet, at the mercy of weather patterns that dictate daily life and the survival of the people and their reindeer, she came to understand the true meaning of adaptation. New Path opens a window onto Nenets life today, highlighting the adjustments they have made to modern life and the challenges they face in the light of expanding resource extraction in the Arctic, of globalisation and of a changing climate.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
