Essay by Alexa Dilworth
Design by Caleb Cain Marcus

Dena Elisabeth Eber's child Margaret announced a new name and a non-binary identity as Alex, and while she fully supports this she is learning who the new person is, learning to love who Alex is becoming, and considering her own evolution as a mother.

As a young adult with autism spectrum disorder and countless physical ailments, Alex struggles to exist in a world that seems to run counter to how they understand it. Along with the gender transition, Alex came into an awareness as an asexual adult, and the book reflects the search for all these identities. Unlike other work on the subject, it investigates not only Alex's identity but also how a mother transitions with her transgender child: both pain and joy come through as she mourns the loss of who she thought Alex would be and falls in love with the person Alex is becoming.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
