Published with the touring exhibition of the same name, made in collaboration with its curator Isaac Blease, and marking the fortieth anniversary of one of the longest and most bitter disputes in Britain. Over two hundred pages explore the part that pictures played during the year-long struggle against pit closures, drawing on material from the Martin Parr Foundation collection among others.

The action began in Yorkshire, led by the National Union of Mineworkers and its president Arthur Scargill against the National Coal Board; the Conservative government under Margaret Thatcher opposed the strike and set out to reduce the power of the unions. Work by Brenda Prince, John Sturrock, John Harris, Jenny Matthews, Roger Tiley, Imogen Young and Chris Killip appears here, along with albums compiled by Philip Winnard, himself a striking miner, sequenced as a chronology that tells the whole history of the year.

The second half turns to the ephemera of the dispute — posters, vinyl records, plates, badges and publications — supported by contemporary texts, talks and interviews with the makers, available only here. Together the materials show both the power and the contradictions of using the camera as a tool of resistance.
