Work made on a six-month journey through the United States in 1982
Funded by the New Zealand arts council

Made on a six-month journey around the United States soon after the author's graduation from the Ilam School of Fine Arts, where Shustak taught. It was an ambitious undertaking, funded by the government arts council, and a rare opportunity to take what he had learned at the school out onto the streets where the art came from.

“The most exciting and relevant communication seemed to me to be happening on the street, much of it in an unconscious spirit: many people recording their feelings on walls, or dancing, dressing in costume and playing music, as well as accidental collages occurring from layers of paint and paper on surfaces which are scraped away revealing lower layers, or paint spilt from a can.”

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
