A collaborative work by four New Zealand-based makers and one writer, breaking out of conventional story-telling to play out their anxieties and doubts about the world they see. Developed over two years, with regular meetings indulgent in wine and homemade cheese as excuses for friendship and banter, it grew from conversations and arguments about mortality, our technologically mired existence and the degradation of the environment.

The project triggered its own version of flygskam for the collaborators, conflicted by the international travel that made much of the work possible and tainted by knowing the greater price to be paid. Images from those travels are drenched in sordid human histories.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
