The immense body of work of André Kertész (1894-1985) was made largely through commissions, and this volume is dedicated to one of them: a report on Corsica ordered by the prestigious journal Art et Médecine, which appeared in December 1933 with texts by Abel Bonnard of the Académie française, Paul Morand and André Thérive.

On 12 or 13 May 1933 he embarked for the island with three cameras in his luggage: a Rolleiflex, a 6 x 9 cm folding camera and a small 9 x 12 cm one. A notebook of exposures, reproduced here, makes it possible to follow his stages from 14 to 20 May. He begins at the gulf of Liscia before ending the day at Piana, where his eye is caught by men sitting in the shade of the church. The next day, after wandering the streets of Calvi, he visits Île-Rousse and Belgodère, where he records the cemetery. In the evening he takes a room at the Mouflon d'Or in Zonza, then goes on to Porto-Vecchio and stops at Bonifacio, ending his journey in Ajaccio before sailing back to the continent. As usual he did not treat Corsica as a holiday destination, but recorded the landscapes and the moments of daily life of its inhabitants: in five or six days on rocky roads he gathered about a hundred images, all reproduced here.
