Patricia Marais fell under the spell of a corner of southern Ardèche on a stormy afternoon in August. She returned in the autumn, out of season, to get to know the area and the people who live there better. For about ten years she came back in different seasons to make colour landscapes in 6 x 6 in this Pays des Vans, without any human presence. At the same time she made tightly framed portraits, on 24 x 36, of women and men of the rural world. Those faces in black and white are another form of landscape.
