Fiume is FantomBooks' second title, curated by Francesco Zanot and designed by Leonardo Sonnoli.

For Guido Guidi the medium is something autobiographical. It is synonymous with inhabiting, and the camera is the instrument which allows him to observe, appropriate and collect what lies beyond his doorstep. The river here flows just a few dozen metres away and he follows its course armed with two different pieces of equipment: a view camera loaded with 8x10 inch plates, which enables extended and wide-ranging observation, and a 6x6 camera, which he uses to get closer to his subjects and to draft the notes for this visual text.

In exploring the medium with the medium, he introduces a series of elements which recall its origin: shadows, reflections, mirrors, windows with shutters and blinds that open and close and let the light filter through or block it out. One of his frames in the Viaggio in Italia series contains both a mirror and a window, the former reflecting the latter, through which dazzling light streams in. It appears to be a tribute to the famous distinction made by John Szarkowski between the realists, who used the camera as a window onto the world in order to describe the appearance of things, and the romantics, for whom it became a mirror turned towards themselves. Guidi's work lies precisely between the two extremes, using the documentary style to testify to the subjects he knows and that are close to him, to the point of being the object of a veritable act of internalisation. The river Savio is another one of these metaphors: it behaves like a mirror and, like the ground glass in the rear standard of a view camera, enables him to observe an upside-down copy of the world surrounding him.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
