The photo book by the Soviet war photographer Valery Faminsky (1914–1993), published in German and English, is an illustrated book that shows the liberation of Berlin, as well as the first days of peace in the city, from a personal, but above all from a very human perspective. Taken without any kind of pathos or propaganda, these photographs describe the longing for peace and the reality of war with a humanistic perspective. The authenticity and proximity to the events that get under your skin allow the viewer to become a witness to these historic hours and days. Judging by the outstanding artistic quality of his photographs, Valery Faminsky is on a par with photographers such as Yevgeny Khaldej and Robert Capa.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
