The White Cliffs of Dover and the East Kent coast are the UK's frontier with continental Europe. A place of departure by sea or tunnel and a historical site of resistance and defence.

The Straits of Dover in the channel are the busiest shipping lane in the world and the Port of Dover is the busiest roll on roll off freight and passenger route in Europe.

Dover is a city shaped by the UK’s relationship with continental Europe. Its residents voted to leave the European Union.

In the event of a no deal Brexit, Dover will be the focus of transport delays and interruptions to supplies indicated in Operation Yellowhammer, the UK government’s outline of potential disruptions resulting from a sudden departure from the European Union.

Edmund Clark was born in Dover. He has walked the white cliffs every year of his life but has never spent much time in the city itself. The divisions and tensions created by the Brexit debate moved him to walk its streets.

This zine is the first in a series of short-run low-cost Here Press publications.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
