Luigi Ghirri’s collaboration with the Italian band CCCP – Fedeli alla linea during the making of Epica Etica Etnica Pathos (1990) reflects many of the central concerns of his photographic practice. Invited to document the recording sessions at Villa Pirondini, an abandoned country house in Emilia-Romagna, Ghirri chose not to focus on the musicians themselves. Instead, he turned his attention to the building, its interiors, objects, gardens, and atmosphere, revealing the subtle relationships between place, memory, and human presence.
This approach was consistent with Ghirri’s rejection of conventional portraiture and celebrity imagery. His photographs privilege spaces over individuals, exploring how architecture, everyday objects, and landscapes can become carriers of meaning. Villa Pirondini appears as a suspended environment where history, decay, imagination, and lived experience overlap.
Many of Ghirri’s recurring themes emerge in these images: rural architecture, abandoned structures, windows, thresholds, reflections, domestic interiors, and the dialogue between nature and culture. Ordinary details are transformed into poetic and enigmatic visual experiences, inviting viewers to look more carefully at the world around them.
One of the most iconic photographs from the project depicts a small chapel converted into a recording studio. Rather than constructing a symbolic scene, Ghirri recognized the inherent tension already present in the space, where the sacred and the everyday coexist. The image encapsulates his ability to reveal unexpected meanings hidden within familiar environments.
Underlying this work is Ghirri’s belief that photography is a way of rediscovering reality. Through careful observation and a deep sensitivity to place, he sought to reveal the mystery contained within ordinary things. His images are both precise and open-ended, encouraging multiple interpretations while reflecting on themes such as memory, absence, landscape, and the passage of time.
